So far the Round Robin points table is as follows: Peter Lupevski leads on 9 points from Doug McFarlane 7 points, Rohit Autar third on 5 points and Andrew Clarke fourth on 3 points.

On a sad note, we were all very sorry to hear of Barbara Farmer’s passing after a long illness. For those who are not aware, Barbara was the wife of Jim Farmer a long time supporter of our club. Jim is a Life Member of the St. George Leagues Club and a foundation member of our squash club from the early 1960’s. He is largely responsible in helping our club remain active by supporting us via an annual Leagues Club grant. At the present time Jim is on the St George Leagues Sports Council as well as being a member of the St. George Leagues Club Board of Directors. Thanks Jim for all your great support over the years. Our thoughts and sympathies are with you and your family at this very sad time in your life.

SQUASH CLUB
We have 6 teams in the 2010 Spring Pennant comp. At present Dave Armstrong’s Div 6 team is coming 2nd. Paul Wright’s Div 9 team is coming 1st. George Keir’s Div 10 teams is also 1st. Steve Keremea’s Div 11 team is 5th. Andrew Wheeler’s Div 12 team is 4th and Jason Reberger’s Div 13 team is 3rd.

The previous Autumn competition was very memorable in more ways than one. Firstly the squash club started the comp with many of the players injured.  As a consequence other players had to fill in for injured players in higher divisions. Some playing 2 or 3 comp matches per week to help the other teams. Because of this club spirit, three of the six teams made it to the finals. Paul Wright’s Div 8 team came 3rd but lost in the preliminary final to President. Frank Duong’s Div 10 team also came 3rd but also lost in the preliminary final to the Bulldogs.

The highlight of the comp. was the performance of Dave Armstrong’s Div 6 team made up of Joe Dundovic, Ian Jacobs, Daryl Curtis, Mark Ireland, Paul Coggiola and various substitutes along the way.  At Round 5 and with many injuries, they were coming last. By Round 10 they were up to 4th and by Round 15 had scraped into 3rd place and in the finals by just 2 competition points. The hot favorites to win this comp. were PCYC. They had gone through the comp very easily finishing streets ahead of second placed Bulldogs and us. So it was to be going a big ask to beat PCYC in the Grand Final after we beat the Bulldogs in the preliminary final.

Our Grand Final lineup was Ian Jacobs, Joe Dundovic, Daryl Curtis and Dave Armstrong. PCYC won the toss and called number two’s, Lindsay Hetherington v our Joe Dundovic. Joe fought hard but on the night Lindsay was just too good winning 3-0 and scoring 45points to Joe’s 30. Next match was our call and Dave called number three’s, Daryl Curtis v PCYC’s Greg Chamberlain. Daryl was really in top form this night and Greg just had no answer to Daryl’s clinical and consistent play. Daryl won his match 3-0 scoring 45 points to Greg’s 31. The next match was Ian Jacobs v PCYC’s Chris Stephens (number 1 ranked player in this division). Ian started really well and with his great touch was able to take the first two sets. In the third set Ian had match point. However, Chris was able to keep the rallies going and slowly wore Ian down eventually winning the next 3 sets and the match 3-2. Ian however managed to score 65 points to Chris’ 64 points.

This result meant that Dave Armstrong’s match with PCYC’s Bill Linton would decide the night. Dave had to win 3-0 or 3-1 for us to win the night comfortably. If Dave won 3-2 it would come down to which team scored the most points on the night. Dave started well and won the first set, but Bill came back to win the next two. Dave fought hard in the fourth set and won it to even up the set count 2 all. Amazingly at this stage the points were very even with PCYC having a slender 1 point lead. Dave needed to win the 5th set by 2 points or more for Saints to win the night. The fifth set was incredibly hard fought. Bill was looking good at 14-13 and had match point. But Dave would not be denied and won the next rally to get back to 14 all. Bill called long game. From here Dave powered ahead to win the set 17-15 which gave our team the title by one point! Well done boys, a great effort against all odds!

The August handicapped Round Robin was won by Kevin Fung from Viv Beri and Daryl Curtis. The points standing at the present for the annual title is Viv Beri and Daryl Curtis leading on 9 points each from Dave Armstrong and Kevin Fung on 8 points and Doug McFarlane and Sana Viengkhou both on 7 points.

St George Leagues Squash Club

St George Leagues Squash Club

The club has 6 teams entered in the 2010 Autumn Pennant Competition. We have teams in Division 3, 6, 8, two in Division 10 and a team in Division 11 and 12. After having such a successful season last year, this season has started in a disappointing fashion. Due to a long list of injuries to many of our players, it has been difficult for the club to field its strongest teams in many of the divisions from week to week. On many occasions we have had to use players from lower divisions in order to get teams on the court. Our appreciation goes to players such as Jason Kwok, Emmanuel Calligeris, Sana Viengkhou, Bill Linton from Ador and many others, that in some cases have had to play 2 or 3 competition matches in a week in order to help the club out.

Needless to say our performances in the various competitions at the present time is nothing to write home about! However, as players come back from injury and start finding form again, we may be able to get a few teams competing in the finals. At the present time Andrew Clarke’s Div 3 team is 6th, Dave Armstrong’s Div 6 is 6th, Paul Wright’s Div 8 team, which has 4 players out with long term injuries is coming a credible 4th, Frank Duong and Jason Kwok’s Div 10 teams are coming 3rd and 4th respectively, Steve Keremea’s Div 11 team is 4th and George Keir’s Div 12 team is also 4th place in a very close competition.

We have had two handicapped Round Robin’s so far this year. February was won by Viv Beri, from Andrew Clarke and Doug McFarlane. April’s Round Robin was won by Dave Armstrong, from Joe Dundovic and Peter Lupevski. The points standing at the present time for our annual Round Robin championship is Dave Armstrong, Viv Beri and Doug McFarlane on 5 points each, from Andrew Clarke and Joe Dundovic on 4 points and Peter Lupevski on 3 points.
On a sadder note I would like to mention the sudden passing in January of Mal Mackenzie. Mal played squash in our lower divisions for many years and also served on the club committee. His cheeky sense of humor and friendly nature will be missed by all of us. On behalf of the players and the club, I would like to express our deep sympathy to his wife, children and family.

In conclusion, anyone interested in playing comp squash for the club can contact me on 0415 641 581 for further information. So until next time, good squashing everybody!

Squash Club September 09 Update

Squash Club September 09 Update

The club has 6 teams entered in the 2009 Spring Pennant Competition. The teams are in Divisions 5, 6, 9, 10, 11 and 12.

So far all the teams are holding their own and are performing pretty well in their respective competitions. Their performances so far indicate that most will make it to the finals if they continue their present form.

Our Division 5 team captained by Andrew Clarke is doing very well and at the present time are leading their comp on 87 points.

David Armstrong’s Division 6 team have had a slow start and at the present time are coming 5th.

Paul Wright’s Division 9 team have had a very good start also, and at the present time are coming 3rd in a very closely matched competition. This team has been re-formed from a mix of players from last comps Division 6 and 7 teams and contains some of the “old men” of the club. The team consists of Paul Wright, Paul Coggiola, Brian Pisani, Chewy Lim and Mark Ireland. The many years of experience contained in this team could prove be very useful at finals time!

Division 10 captained be Frank Duong are coming 2nd.  This team has had a few setbacks in that Tan Bui has had to withdraw due to an achilles tendon injury and Adrian Chen was unable to compete this comp, which really weakened their team. However, Sana Viengkhou , Emmanuel Calligeris and Frank Duong have all been performing well under the circumstances and deserve credit for still remaining competitive.

Jason Kwok’s Division 11 team are also doing well and at the present time are coming 2nd and within striking distance of the leaders Bulldogs 8.

Our Division 12 team led by George Keir are also doing well and at present are coming 3rd.

The club Round Robin Competition is now being played on the last Sunday afternoon of every second month. Our first one for the year was held in April, with Chewy Lim winning from Doug MacFarlane and Daryl Curtis. June’s Round Robin was won by Mursil from Andrew Clarke and Joe Dundovic. While August was won by Joe Dundovic from Daryl Curtis and Doug MacFarlane.
At the present time Daryl Curtis leads on 11.5 points from Doug MacFarlane on 11 points, Sana Viengkhou on 10 points and Andrew Clarke on 8.5 points.

In conclusion any member of the St. George Leagues Club interested in playing competition squash can contact me Brian Pisani on 0415 641 581. Till next time. Good squashing everybody.

Squash Club January Update

The club had 6 teams entered in the 2008 Spring Pennant Competition. They were graded in Divisions 2, 5, 7, 8, 11 and 12.

Sid Mir’s Division 2 team,  promoted after winning the premiership in Division 3 the previous season, found the going a little tougher this comp, but still managed to come a credible fourth.

Our Division 5 team of Frank Bartolotti, Robert Edwards, Rod Dale, Peter Lupevski, Joe Dundovic and Andrew Clarke (Capt) managed to come second overall. However, went down to President in the preliminary final.

Division 7 came fourth. This was a reasonable result considering the team had a number of injuries during the season.

Our Division 8 team of Mickey Bek, Brian Pisani, Paul Wright (Capt.), Rohit Autar and Gerald Walz came second overall in the comp. They managed to beat Bulldogs in the preliminary final, however went down to the minor premiers and form team of the comp Heroes Hill in the grand final.

Division 11 consisting of John Richardson, Tan Bui, Adrian Chen, Paul Riddell, Jason Kwok (Capt.), Kevin Fung and George Guan came second in their comp. They managed to win their preliminary final very convincingly against Bulldogs, but went down (18-10 and 2 rubbers each) to the very experienced Bankstown RSL in the grand final.

Division 12 found the going a little tough at times but still managed to come fourth.

Although we didn’t manage to take out any premierships this comp. The teams as a whole performed reasonably well, considering some of the teams were promoted to a higher grade after performing well last season.

The monthly handicapped round robin this year was a hard fought affair  throughout all the year. Going into the final month the leaders board was as follows: Chewy Lim 24 points, Doug MacFarlane 23.5 points, Joe Dundovic 21 points with both Peter Lupevski and John Richardson on 17.5 points. Our eventual winner Joe Dundovic played really well in the November finals to defeat Doug MacFarlane and take maximum points. The final standings were Joe Dundovic first and round robin champion 26 points, Doug MacFarlane 25.5 points second, Chewy Lim 25 points third from Peter Lupevski and John Richardson equal fourth with 19.5 points each. A very close finish between the top three players.

In conclusion the squash club would like to greatly thank our two major sponsors St. George Leagues Club and the Day-Night Chemist Ramsgate for helping to make this year another successful and enjoyable one for our club. Their contributions are much appreciated by all the squash club members. On closing, anyone interested in joining the squash club with the view to playing comp. squash can contact me (Brian Pisani) on 0415 641 581. So till next time.
Good squashing everybody!
