St George Table Tennis Club Report

28 January 2010
We would also like to congratulate the St George and Sutherland Shire A-grade players for winning the 2009 Winter Competitions. They are, as shown in the photo (from left to right): Gary Braker, Ibrahim Bazzi (Secretary), Peter Liu and Charlie Xu. The two players which are not pictured are Michael Antoun and Charlie Shen.

Two important table tennis competitions were held in our own backyard at the Hurstville Aquatic Sports Centre. The Table
Tennis World Masters Games was held 10th-17th October and the Australian Veterans championship from 17th – 24th October.

Several hundred players from around Australia and all over the world came to stay and compete. A number of St George players also competed although some unfortunately could not due to work commitments.
The St. George Players achieved reasonable results:

  • Michael Antoun came 7th from 15 in his group;
  • Arno Keonig came 4th from 11 in his group;
  • Gary Braker was runner up in his group; and
  • Sam Wong competed hard in his group

The well known Australian champion Matthew Walker made a visit to have a friendly game with the St. George Champion Gary Braker. We also welcomed a visit from 2 table tennis legends – our 2 ex-Quinlan Shield players; Tom Boyd and Kenneth Cole.

Regards
Ibrahim Bazzi

Squash Club September 09 Update

The club has 6 teams entered in the 2009 Spring Pennant Competition. The teams are in Divisions 5, 6, 9, 10, 11 and 12.

So far all the teams are holding their own and are performing pretty well in their respective competitions. Their performances so far indicate that most will make it to the finals if they continue their present form.

Our Division 5 team captained by Andrew Clarke is doing very well and at the present time are leading their comp on 87 points.

David Armstrong’s Division 6 team have had a slow start and at the present time are coming 5th.

Paul Wright’s Division 9 team have had a very good start also, and at the present time are coming 3rd in a very closely matched competition. This team has been re-formed from a mix of players from last comps Division 6 and 7 teams and contains some of the “old men” of the club. The team consists of Paul Wright, Paul Coggiola, Brian Pisani, Chewy Lim and Mark Ireland. The many years of experience contained in this team could prove be very useful at finals time!

Division 10 captained be Frank Duong are coming 2nd.  This team has had a few setbacks in that Tan Bui has had to withdraw due to an achilles tendon injury and Adrian Chen was unable to compete this comp, which really weakened their team. However, Sana Viengkhou , Emmanuel Calligeris and Frank Duong have all been performing well under the circumstances and deserve credit for still remaining competitive.

Jason Kwok’s Division 11 team are also doing well and at the present time are coming 2nd and within striking distance of the leaders Bulldogs 8.

Our Division 12 team led by George Keir are also doing well and at present are coming 3rd.

The club Round Robin Competition is now being played on the last Sunday afternoon of every second month. Our first one for the year was held in April, with Chewy Lim winning from Doug MacFarlane and Daryl Curtis. June’s Round Robin was won by Mursil from Andrew Clarke and Joe Dundovic. While August was won by Joe Dundovic from Daryl Curtis and Doug MacFarlane.
At the present time Daryl Curtis leads on 11.5 points from Doug MacFarlane on 11 points, Sana Viengkhou on 10 points and Andrew Clarke on 8.5 points.

In conclusion any member of the St. George Leagues Club interested in playing competition squash can contact me Brian Pisani on 0415 641 581. Till next time. Good squashing everybody.

Brian Pisani.
Publicity Officer.
