Don't be Shy – Take up Bowls

It was with pleasure we welcomed back our oldest player Les Turner back to the club to see his mates and enjoy some Christmas cheer with the boys.

Les is 97 and lives in a nursing home close to the main club.

We commenced our new year on January 16 and everyone was eager to see each other and exchange stories on what they had done in the Christmas break.

Wednesday was a very hot day and most of the players heeded the advice of our president John Martin to drink some water before we went out onto the green and to try to get some shade.

There was a good roll up for the first game of the year and after refreshments, club members, some of them lucky to have won raffle prizes, wandered off home before a big storm hit.

Anyone in the League’s club interested in taking up the sport of bowls, don’t be shy.

We will make you feel very welcome.

Just phone the secretary on 9587 6299 just after midday on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

We can even lend you bowls and teach you to play.

Bowling Club Report

It is with regret I report the passing away of one of our popular committee members, David Carmichael at his daughter’s residence in Perth. David had not been well for many years; we will all miss him. Vale David. The Bowling Club sent a letter of condolence to his family.

The Bowling Club sent their usual donation to the Children’s Ward of the St George Hospital Kogarah for the sum of $2,500.00.

The Annual General Meeting is set for Thursday, 20 September 2007 at St George Leagues Club at 7pm.

Bowls membership fees for 2007-08 can now be paid.

As most players will know we have relocated to our new green at Moorefield Bowling Club in French Street Kogarah. The green is playing well and is a credit to the greenkeeper.

To the Board of St George Leagues Club we extend our thanks for their assistance in helping us to relocate to Moorefield; as major works had to be done adjacent to our old green at the Leagues Club.

Any Leagues Club members wishing to play bowls will be made very welcome. It doesn’t matter whether you have played bowls before or not, you can be taught how to play. We can lend you bowls while being instructed so you don’t have to go to any expense. Phone the Bowls Secretary on 9587 6299 about 12 noon on Saturdays or Wednesdays.

To those on the sick list we look forward to seeing you back on the green.

Ray Poutney,
Publicity Officer.

Patron, Lola English, Celebrated her 80th Birthday

WOMEN’S BOWLS

Our 2005 bowls year commenced on January 18 when our Patron, Lola English, celebrated her 80th birthday.

The highlight of the day was Lola being presented with a birthday cake, which she shared with the Club members.

Lola makes and decorates a fruitcake for members celebrating their 80th birthdays, so it was very fitting to thank her this way.

The Committee has been very busy hosting the James Wall Shield with 72 players to be catered for.

The morning tea was, as always, well done, with the red-and-white tablecloths adding to the Club looking wonderful.

This was on 31 January and two weeks later the District Fours were at the Club.

With full greens and 72 players the workers were again well in evidence.

The greens are playing so well and many of the players commented on this fact.

For the District Pairs on 5 March we again had eight rinks, which meant thirty two players as well as our own social players on the greens as this was our own social Tuesday playing day.

To the Committee girls who gave up their time and energy we are very grateful, they deserved all our thanks for a wonderful job well done.

The Club Singles has now been played with last year’s champion, Pat Rieck again winning against Anne Short after a great hard fought game.

Congratulations to both players.

Next on the list for the Championship Games are the Club Pairs already drawn.

Good luck to all who have entered these events.

To our many sick ladies we hope you will soon be well again and back to bowls.

Our next District event to be hosted at the Club is the final of the District Singles on 31 May.

As there are forty-two entries in this event it will be a great honour for the player who becomes the District Champion.
