Squash Club News

The club had 5 teams entered in the 2012 Spring Pennant competition. The majority of our teams found the going very tough, as quite a few of them had to play in higher grades and at a higher standard than they were used to.

Our best performed team was our Division 7 side. The team consisted of Duncan Romoser, Haydn Daly, Napoti Teremaki, Rohit Autar and Lyn Page (Capt.). We managed to come 2nd overall to the very strong Georges Hall M1 team. Unfortunately, we were defeated in the preliminary final by the 3rd placed team, the other Georges Hall M2 team.

In other team results, Doug McFarlane’s Division 3 team came 5th to South’s Juniors M2 team. Dave Armstrong’s Division 6 team came 6th in a very tough comp. Kevin Fung’s Division 9 team came 5th to a very strong Ambervale side and Con Theophani’s Division 11 team also finished 5th to Bulldogs M9 team.

Our monthly handicapped Round Robin results were as follows: October results were: 1st Chewy Lim defeated Dave Armstrong 21-11. 2nd was Joe Dundovic defeating Mursill Rabbani 21-12 and 3rd was Doug McFarlane defeating Sana Viengkhou 21-14.

November winners were 1st Joe Dundovic, 2nd Sana Viengkhou and 3rd was Andrew Clarke.

Our overall Round Robin champion for 2012 was Joe Dundovic on 34 points, from Sana Viengkhou 30 points, Doug McFarlane and Dave Armstrong 22 points, Peter Lupevski 20 points and Daryl Curtis 14 points. Congratulations Joe on being our Round Robin champion for 2012. It was very much deserved, as you always give 100% commitment whenever you play for the club!

On a sad note two of our past squash club members passed away during the later part of 2012. Jim Farmer was a Life Member of the St George Leagues Club, a past long time member of the St George Leagues Sports Council and one of the founding members of our squash club in 1962. He was a great supporter of our club and very much liked by all who knew him. John Hardy played A Grade squash for the club during the heyday years of squash. Again, he was very much liked by all of those who knew him. He was a very good club man and took an interest in helping and giving advice to many of the clubs present older squash players when they were starting out many years ago. Including myself! Our sympathies go to both their respective families. They both were really great guys and an inspiration to our club.

Finally, anyone interested in playing competition squash for the club can make enquires by contacting Brian Pisani on 0415 641581. Till next time. Good squashing everyone!
